Below are many of the units at Sarvodaya that are open to volunteers and visitors.
1. Deshodaya Unit: aims to unite the people of the Sri Lanka through community development. The six development initiatives are spiritual, moral, cultural, social, economic, and political development. Deshodaya is the total combined development initiative that includes both qualitative and quantitative goals.
2. 5R Unit (Relief, Rehabilitation, Reconstruction, Reconciliation, Reawakening): works to raise the standard of living and establish a self sustaining community by empowering and integrating those who are affected by the war and natural disasters into society after having been rehabilitated.
3. Information Technology Unit: provides training in information technology to communities who otherwise don’t have access to such advanced technology.
4. Community Health Unit: promotes health within the country through health clinics, HIV and AIDS prevention, disease prevention education
5. Biodiversity and Environment Conservation Unit: works to protect the ecology of Sri Lanka through a variety of projects and grants.
6. Development Communication Unit (Media Unit): produces audio and video publications for the promotion of Sarvodaya internationally. Also works to preserve the media already held at Sarvodaya headquarters by storing and cataloging previous films, digital photos, and audio tapes.
7. Early Child Development Programme: identifies and promotes methodologies for the total development of a child from birth up to 18 years and raises awareness in the community to create a suitable environment for the improvement of psycho-social, health, and nutritional levels of children.
8. International Unit: maintains the rapport and goodwill with foreign personnel and countries who want to become involved with the Sarvodaya movement. It also works to organize travel for those interested in visiting the island as a volunteer.
9. Sarvodaya Women’s Movement: engages in several activities concerning the welfare of women through mothers’ groups and women’s empowerment
10. Sarvodaya Legal Movement: provides legal services to those in rural areas without the means to represent themselves. It also works towards general conflict resolution and empowerment through legal education and intervention.
11. Sarvodaya Suwasetha Sewa: aspires towards a safe and secure future for marginalized children, elders, and disabled people who do not enjoy the privileges of a normal life. In order to achieve this goal, this unit manages preschools, a center for malnourished infants, a home for teenage mothers, and children’s homes as well as community based rehabilitation for elders and disabled people in need.
12. Sarvodaya Santhi Sena: a group whose sole goal is to promote peace and rehabilitation throughout the island primarily by focusing on youth at intercultural exchange camps, an annual national leaders conference, and other training programs that promote mutual understanding in a post-war country.
13. Development Education Centres: multi-acre complexes around Sri Lanka that are used as locations for development seminars, agricultural models, and education centers.
14. Sarvodaya Rural Technology Unit: serves rural communities by providing them with the technology to meet their basic needs. Some projects include water filtration systems, common water wells and taps, hygienic lavatories, and alternate energy schemes.
